Project Alpona is a community initiative founded on a simple belief: talent exists everywhere, but opportunities do not. Inspired by the traditional Bengali floor art form of Alpona, the project seeks to preserve cultural heritage while creating dignified livelihood opportunities for women from underserved communities.
Supported and mentored by Sunaayy Foundation, a non-profit committed to women’s empowerment and community development, Project Alpona provides women with a platform to refine inherent skills, gain entrepreneurial exposure, and build confidence and self-reliance through meaningful work.
hrough its work, Sunaayy Foundation has enabled many women to become employable by strengthening academic and vocational skills. In the process, it became evident that many women also possessed remarkable traditional and creative abilitiesthat had remained largely untapped. Project Alpona was born out of the desire to nurture these talents and provide a space where artisans could showcase their craftsmanship while learning the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.

very product created under Project Alpona is handcrafted with care using sustainable and environmentally conscious materials. The initiative works with artisans from humble backgrounds, enabling them to develop skills, and take pride in their craftsmanship.
The project’s signature hero collection comprises handcrafted paper-mâché trays and coasters. While paper-mâché as a medium is widely known, the level of craftsmanship involved in these products is uncommon due to the time and effort required.
Each piece is carefully curated over a period of 10 to 15 days, making every creation unique.
Other products include hand-painted jewellery, fridge magnets, keychains, canvas bags, crochet creations, and a variety of utility accessories.
Project Alpona is more than a craft collective, it is a platform for empowerment. Every purchase supports artisans, strengthens livelihoods, and helps preserve traditional crafts. Through Project Alpona, craft becomes more than an object; it becomes an opportunity, a story, and a celebration of human creativity.
A defining feature of Project Alpona is its commitment to upcycling. Old garments and discarded fabrics are transformed into bags, pouches, home décor items, accessories, and other customised products. Whether preserving textiles that hold cherished memories or simply giving materials a second life, the initiative ensures that treasured fabrics are reimagined into beautiful and functional pieces rather than discarded.
Project Alpona undertakes customised and made-to-order projects for individuals, institutions, and businesses. The initiative also welcomes bulk orders and corporate gifting requirements, offering products that are thoughtful, sustainable, and handcrafted with purpose.
